About Us
Luna Sea Vodka was born from a dream, a bicycle, and a lifetime of
determination.
Our story begins in Guatemala, where founder Deven Wek was importing
tequila and dreaming of creating his own spirit. Vodka had always been
close to home — memories of late nights playing chess and sharing a drink
with his Ukrainian father. That connection inspired the foundation.
One day, Deven discovered the butterfly pea flower — a natural ingredient
that turns blue and transforms color when citrus is added. The idea struck:
create the world’s first naturally color-changing vodka. But there was one
challenge — he wanted to make it in California, his home state, along the
pristine Central Coast where he grew up.
With almost nothing but a dream, Deven sold what little he had and
returned home. A friend in Santa Cruz offered him a spare room. From there,
he began rebuilding his life — working days at HH Fresh Fish, nights at
the Santa Cruz Hostel, biking everywhere on a donated bike, and driving
for Uber between shifts. Every dollar went toward one goal: licensing and
launching a vodka brand unlike any other.
Through relentless work and an unbreakable spirit, Luna Sea Vodka was
born. But just as success arrived, a new challenge appeared — the butterfly
pea flower wasn’t yet FDA approved. Deven refused to give up. He pivoted,
released a clear vodka, and entered it into the San Francisco World Spirits
Competition — where it earned Double Gold three years in a row, followed
by the coveted Platinum Award.
When the butterfly pea flower finally gained FDA approval, Luna Sea
returned to its roots — bringing the original vision to life: a vodka that
changes color, just as the moon changes the tide.
Today, Luna Sea Vodka stands for family, perseverance, and the belief that
no dream is too far out of reach. Every bottle honors Deven’s father and
Mother, the lessons of hard work, and the beauty of chasing something
extraordinary.
From Santa Cruz to the world — this is Luna Sea Vodka, where passion meets
the impossible.
